In Grade 4, we work on enhancing our reading accuracy and fluency, and put a stronger focus on comprehension strategies. We will do this through the use of the Scott Foresman Reading Street program, Guided Reading groups working on author or novel studies, and application in independent reading books. Students will read a variety of genres, both fiction and informational text.
Reading and Writing is linked through a discussion of Author's Purpose. To that end, Fourth Graders are expected to write across a variety of genres, including Narrative, Expository and Opinion pieces, adapting their writing for specific tasks and audiences.

Summer Reading Counts!
Be sure to maintain daily reading throughout the summer! Read together as a family, read aloud to a dog at the library or join a book club! Make it fun and interactive and it will help your children develop a lifelong love of reading. Be sure to check out Mrs. Moody’s book selections and summer reading activities at the Paul Pratt Library.
Reading Logs:
Each month students will receive a new reading log, which is due at the end of the month. Expectations are that students read at least 4 days a week, 20-30 minutes per night. Students may read along while an adult reads to them, read along with an audio text or read independently. See below for a sample reading log.

Don't read like a robot! Practice this strategy: slide your finger under the words you are going to read and scoop them up in one breath- pause - then scoop up the next few words. Practice reading accurately while reading in a voice that matches the feeling. Make what you are reading aloud match the text you are reading. Express how a word is said, for example: words sound different when they are questioned, shouted, whispered or wondered.
